Kbal Spean

Kbal Spean is an ancient archaeological site. There are many rock relief carvings in the river bed and along the banks. It’s known as the “Valley of a 1000 Lingas.” A linga is a phallic symbol of Shiva, the Hindu god. There are other motifs of animals and some other Hindu gods including, Vishnu, Rama, Brahman, Hanuman and Lakshmi.

Banteay Srei

Banteay Srei was an early temple built before Angkor Wat in the 10th century. It was dedicated to Shiva, the Hindu God. This unique temple was the only known temple not to have been built by a king. Instead it was built the king’s courtiers. The name translates into English to mean the “Citadel of the Women” or the “Citadel of Beauty”. Many people believe that this is probably connected to the very fine carvings on the bas reflefs that could only have been made by the hands of a woman.

Preah Khan

This temple was built in the 12th century by King Jayavarman. The name translates into English as “Royal Sword”. It has been left in a ruinous state and a lot of the jungle is literally growing through the temple. This is one of the larger temples built during this time and was filled with nearly 100,000 officials and their servants. Preah Khan was the site of Jayavarman VII’s victory over the invading Chams in 1191.
