Your guide will pick you up from your hotel around 7am before beginning the scenic 160km drive to Kampong Thom province. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of rural villages, rice fields, and traditional Cambodian life.
Sambor Prei Kuk was once the capital of the Chenla Kingdom during the 7th century and predates the famous temples of Angkor by several centuries. The temple complex consists of three main groups surrounded by forest and ancient brick walls. Built mainly from brick, the temples feature unique octagonal towers, intricate carvings, and peaceful jungle surroundings.
During your visit, your guide will explain the history of King Isanavarman I, the development of the Chenla civilization, and the importance of this site in Khmer history. You will also see evidence of Cambodia’s modern history, including bomb craters from the American bombing campaign during the 1970s.
After exploring the temples, you’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant before returning to Siem Reap in the late afternoon.
